Quick answer
For most work trips, a carry-on and a laptop bag are enough. Pack a small, coordinated wardrobe in wrinkle-resistant fabrics, a compact tech kit (laptop charger, multi-port USB-C charger or adapter, power bank, cables), and keep a ready-packed toiletry bag so packing takes minutes.
The business carry-on
A carry-on avoids waiting at baggage claim. If you need quick laptop access at security, a suitcase with a front laptop pocket or a separate laptop backpack works well. Our carry-on luggage guide compares bags that fit the common 22 x 14 x 9 inch limit, and the travel backpack guide includes a light laptop backpack.
A wrinkle-resistant capsule wardrobe
- One blazer or jacket that works with everything (wear it on the plane)
- 2–3 shirts or tops in wrinkle-resistant fabric
- 1–2 pairs of trousers or a skirt in a neutral color
- One pair of smart shoes that you can walk in, plus a casual pair if there’s room
- Gym clothes only if you’ll realistically use them
Fold shirts around each other or use a garment folder, and hang clothes in a steamy bathroom on arrival to release creases.
The tech kit
- Laptop and its charger, or a multi-port USB-C charger that can power it
- Travel adapter for international trips. Check whether it can deliver enough wattage for your laptop; see our adapter guide.
- Power bank under 100Wh, in your carry-on. See airline-friendly power banks.
- One short cable per device type, in a small pouch
- Noise-canceling headphones for flights and hotel rooms
- Presentation adapters (HDMI or USB-C dongle) if you’ll present
Habits that save time
- Keep a permanently packed toiletry bag and tech pouch.
- Save a reusable packing list for work trips. Our packing list generator has a business option.
- Store documents offline: boarding passes, hotel confirmation and meeting addresses.
- Track expenses as you go with our trip expense tracker.
